A separate number is a buffer. It is the one you give out before you know someone, the one you print on a listing, the one you can switch off. Your own number stays with the people and accounts that really need it.
When a separate number helps
- Dating and meeting new people. Give the separate line first. If it goes badly, block them in one tap and your own number was never shared.
- Selling online. Buyers call and text a number that is only for selling. See selling without giving out your number.
- Sign-ups and loyalty cards. Shops and newsletters that ask for a number get this one, so the promotional texts land there.
- Landlords, contractors and one-off jobs. People you deal with for a few weeks don't need your number for years.
- Work. A line for clients lets you set quiet hours and leave work behind at night.

How a line in an app works
The number is provided by a licensed carrier and delivered over the internet. When someone dials it, your phone rings in the app, even when the app is closed. When you call from it, the other person sees that line's number. Texts and voicemail arrive in the app, grouped under the line they were sent to, so work never mixes with family.
One thing to know: these are internet-based numbers, and some banks and large apps refuse them for sign-up codes. For those, keep using your own number or an authenticator app. More on why.
Common questions
Do I need another SIM or phone for a separate number?
No. A line in an app runs on the phone you already have and uses Wi-Fi or mobile data, so your SIM and your own number stay as they are.
Can the person I call see my personal number?
No. When you call from your Nimra line, the other person sees that line's number.
Can I switch the number off?
Yes. Set quiet hours, block anyone, send callers who aren't in your contacts to voicemail, or let the line lapse by not renewing it.
